COMMODITIES

Commodities are goods or raw materials. They are often called commodities only, if they are high standardized by trade practices so that they are bought and sold without further specification.
The high level of standardization of the products also makes it possible for these goods to be used as pure commercial objects, that means, they are no longer purchased to meet needs, but traded to exploit price differences over time. Often, these goods are traded on different marketplaces, so that a simultaneous acting on several trading venues to exploit price differences (so-called arbitrage) is made.

Well-known exchanges for commodities are the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the International Continental Exchange (ICE), the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). However, a large part of the business takes place outside the exchanges in the so-called over-the-counter market (OTC market).

COMMODITY TRANSACTIONS

The majority of the transactions take place in futures.

Forward transactions are transactions with a deferred fulfillment date or period. The fulfillment takes place "on forward". This will enable market players to protect themselves against price changes far in advance of the delivery date and thus hedge against market price fluctuations.
Although commodity futures have a bad reputation, they are an indispensable part of corporate risk management and do the same thing as hedging against currency fluctuations in export transactions.

DERIVATIVES

In many cases, the physical goods are no longer traded but only derivatives. Derivatives are contracts derived from the underlying physical transactions. Typical derivatives are financial futures, options or swaps.

ELECTRICITY, GAS, EMISSION CERTIFICATES ARE COMMODITIES

Electricity, gas and also emission certificates are already called commodities today. These products are traded on the one hand to cover an original need or to sell the production, on the other hand, they are also traded as pure speculation objects. In this duality, there is the opportunity for the market players, to trade to cover their needs or to speculate.
